Digital Scholarship Training Program (DSTP)

We provide student training and professional development through our innovative Digital Scholarship Training Program (DSTP). The Digital Scholarship Training Program (DSTP) presents an uncommon opportunity for graduate students to learn digital scholarship skills, theories, and methods relating to research and pedagogy.

Students selected for the program work regular shifts at the center, helping faculty, staff, and students with digital research and pedagogy-related questions. They are also paired with research projects in their area of interest and learn the necessary skills while gaining valuable experience in digital scholarship.

The program’s training and professional development aspects are designed to prepare all ECDS students to be successful in careers within, alongside, and beyond the academy through an array of opportunities such as:

  • Completing training modules in digital tools and methods
  • Work on ECDS projects together with staff and fellow students
  • Attending digital scholarship workshops and seminars
  • Training and teaching workshops
  • Creating training materials
  • Professional development seminars and career-coaching mentorship

Graduate Community of Digital Scholars

The Graduate Community of Digital Scholars is a joint program of the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry, the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship, and the Digital Publishing in the Humanities initiative. Our goal is to offer a supportive and welcoming space for Emory graduate students to share and discuss works-in-progress which engage with the digital humanities, whether dissertation research, public humanities projects with digital components, grant applications for digital projects, or pedagogical materials using digital tools or technologies.

The format for AY 2024-25 is a works-in-progress workshop with monthly meetings over lunch. Participants are expected to attend consistently and to carefully review fellow participants’ pre-circulated materials prior to each session. Participants may share written material, digital prototypes, or a mixture of the two. Data tables or databases cannot themselves be the entire focus of a works-in-progress discussion. Applications for grants or other opportunities should contain a substantial and explicit focus on digital work.

Former GCDS participants are warmly encouraged to attend and to share their work, though presentation slots will prioritize students who have never shared work at GCDS before. Our 2024-25 workshop will run from September to May.

ECDS Graduate Internship Experience

Experiential learning has the potential to enhance graduate students’ transition into a wide range of careers. ECDS offers one-semester internship opportunities for graduate students, providing training to broaden their skills and expand their career options. Interns will receive training in digital tools and methods, work on digital scholarship projects together with ECDS staff and graduate students, and learn how interdisciplinary research centers operate on a daily basis.

Interested students should be prepared to commit to coming to ECDS for eight hours per week for the duration of one semester. Remote participation is not possible at this time.

The program is currently only open for students enrolled in a degree program from the Laney Graduate School since students will receive course credit for completing the internship through the “GRAD 705R: Graduate Internship Experience” class. Please refer to the information page from the Laney Graduate School for more details on the administrative process.

If you are interested in an internship with ECDS, please reach out to ECDS staff Alexander Cors at least two months before the beginning of the semester in which you would like to participate.

Digital Scholarship and Media Studies Certificate (Laney Graduate School)

The Laney Graduate School awards a Certificate in Digital Scholarship and Media Studies (DSMS) upon fulfilling related requirements.

The certificate requires the successful completion of four courses from an approved list, one of which must be the Seminar in Digital Scholarship and Media Studies (DSMS 700), and one of which must be an approved internship in digital scholarship.

In addition, students choose two elective seminars from a list of campus-wide courses regularly taught in the Laney Graduate School that feature digital media and scholarship. The certificate program encourages additions to the list of eligible courses (e.g. new courses, cross-listed courses with other departments, or special topics courses offered by visiting faculty) at the discretion of the program co-directors and certificate committee members.

ELIGIBILITY

Students interested in the DSMS certificate must be enrolled and in good standing in a PhD program of the Laney Graduate School.

Librarians and staff employed by Emory are also eligible to apply.
